This axe excels at felling, limbing, bucking, splitting, and can even be used for hewing. The unique design of this axe can be traced back to the middle ages and has gradually been refined ever since. This particular axe is made in the traditional manner from three pieces of steel, the body and collar are forged from a single piece mild steel, the poll is medium-high carbon steel (1045) and the bit is 80CrV2 high carbon tool steel both are forge-welded to the body. The collar which is the defining feature of this axe is multifunctional it serves to increase the wood to steel contact making for a more solid connection between head and handle, it serves as an overstrike guard when splitting and it also enables the axe to be used as a froe to pry stubborn splits open.
