Custom Hewing Axe

Custom Hewing Axe

from $900.00

This large axe is used for squaring up logs to be used in timber frame construction. The axe is swung in short accurate strokes so that the heavy head will effectively plane or chisel off wood leaving a relatively smooth flat surface.

The axe features an offset handle hand riven and steam bent by Nicholas from straight grained air dried ash wood this puts the uses hands parallel to the edge for control, but leaves enough room, so that the user won’t skin their knuckles on the log being hewn.

The axe head itself is forged from five separate pieces of steel painstakingly forgewelded together in a coal/coke forge. The head has a mild steel body, a 1045 steel poll (moderately hardened so it can be used to drive hewing dogs) and a fully hardened and tempered 80crv2 steel edge. The axe eye is twisted relative to the edge to accommodate the offset handle, and the edge is subtly bent (like a very shallow gouge) so that the corners won’t dig in and tear out wood.

This particular axe doesn’t recreate any specific axe from history but draws much of its inspiration from German, Austrian and Eastern European examples.

The axe can, for no extra charge, include some decorative stamp work.

Optional custom made leather sheath.
